Legal Intern

Department: MEPUSA - Legal
Location: Houston, TX

SUMMARY:

Mitsui & Co. Energy Marketing and Services (USA), Inc. (MEMS) is an energy marketing, trading, and services company with a commodity portfolio that includes LNG, natural gas, power, crude oil and new energy.

The Legal and Compliance Department at MEMS is seeking a Legal Intern for a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2026 in the Galleria area of Houston, TX. This internship will provide on-the-job experience working with an attorney and paralegals in regulatory and compliance, legal contracts, and special legal projects pertaining to the energy industry. The Legal Intern will gain a better understanding of various legal functions and apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world practical setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn the application of contract and energy law, and also regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to the company’s operations
  • Support contract review and negotiation by learning to identify key legal, commercial, and compliance issues; assist in reviewing contracts prior to escalation to paralegals and attorneys, and potentially serve as a point of contact during negotiation processes.
  • Assist in legal and compliance research as needed
  • Participate in special projects, cross-departmental initiatives, and other legal or compliance assignments as directed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall goals of the Legal and Compliance Department.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Computer skills including intermediate level proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to build strong professional relationships and collaborate effectively

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a law related major with an expected graduation of December 2026 or May 2027 with plans to attend law school
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Major GPA of 3.2 or greater
  • Senior standing

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Fluent verbal and written skills in English.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Physical demands include:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and may need to routinely move around to communicate with different groups
